It was pretty tough to work on this illustration, since I already did this before, about 8 years ago, when I was trying to establish a personal style in the first years of my illustration career. When I had to challenge this again, I found myself staring at the blank page while this eight year old image is the only thing that came to my mind, and not because I particularly like it – I am not very faithful to my illustrations. However, that image, together with two other images to form a series, was some kind of a “milestone” to me, a sort of a path or direction to lead to other work to follow. I do believe that every work created is actually a consequence of its preceding work, even if it is dealing with totally different stuff. I decided not to go against it but to do some kind of a personal tribute to that old work – after all, it has done its share.
היה לא פשוט לעבוד על האיור הזה, היות וכבר איירתי אותו בעבר, אי שם לפני שמונה שנים בערך, כשניסיתי לבסס איזשהו סגנון בתחילת דרכי כמאיירת. כשניגשתי שוב למשימה הזו, לא יכולתי שלא לבהות בדף הלבן ולראות בעיני רוחי את האיור ההוא, ולאו דוקא בגלל חיבה יתרה אליו או אל שני האחרים שמצטרפים אליו לסידרה – אני מאוד לא שומרת אמונים לאיוריי. עם זאת, האיור ההוא, יחד עם עוד שניים אחרים בסידרה, היווה סוג של מפנה או אבן דרך עבורי, מעין תפיסת כיוון מסויימת שממנה נולדו איורים אחרים. אני בכלל מאמינה שכל איור הוא מעין המשך של האיור הקודם, גם אם האיור הקודם הוא בנושא אחר לגמרי. החלטתי שלא לנסות להילחם בזה אלא ליצור משהו שהוא כמו סוג של מחווה פרטית לאיור הישן – בכל זאת, צריך לזכור לו גם את הדברים הטובים.

I am liking your new work, and can see that it is an evolution from what went before.. The tilted perspective, the muted palette (though now refreshed with green) give a continuity. And I like the new addition of collage, it's a good surprise. All in all: yay!

I've just updated the first image – I changed the collage and now you can see the old lady more clearly. The editor pointed out that it was a bit hard to identify her in the first version.

נחשפתי אליך לראשונה דרך האיור הישן (כחלק מסדרה של 3). בדיוק סיימתי את הלימודים והלכתי לראות את התערוכה של אגודת המאיירים. אני זוכרת שעמדתי נפעמת מול שלושת האיורים, ומכיוון שגם אני מאיירת באקריליק (עבודה שלוקחת המון זמן) החלטתי לעקוב אחריך ולראות אם זה משתלם…

Humbly, I think that the point is not whether the latter is more beautiful or better, I think is different and it is this difference that makes it more interesting and evidence the current process that author is exploring. Now, I confess that your little red hypnotized me :)
You are absolutely right, I agree with you. I was showing process. I think that it is never the question weather an illustration is pretty or not, but if it stimulates thinking and emotion.
